Well Pump is Running But No Water — What it Means

Pump motor humming or running but nothing at the faucet? Five likely causes, in order of how often we see them.

A well pump that is running but producing no water has lost prime, lost its check valve, dropped its drop pipe, or is sitting in a well that has run dry. On a jet pump it almost always means lost prime; on a submersible it usually means a failed check valve, a broken drop pipe, or a dry well. Either way, do not let it keep running — pumping air destroys seals and bearings within hours.

What our team handles on the call

  • Jet pump priming and impeller service
  • Submersible check valve and foot valve replacement
  • Drop pipe inspection and replacement
  • Static water level testing for dry-well diagnosis
  • Well yield and recovery rate measurement
  • Full submersible pump pull when needed

How a service call works

  1. 1
    Free phone diagnosis

We walk through symptoms, water pressure, sounds, and system age to narrow the problem before we roll a truck.

  2. 2
    On-site test

We check voltage at the pressure switch, draw amps on the pump, and verify pressure tank pre-charge before opening anything.

  3. 3
    Written estimate

You see the recommended scope, repair vs replacement, parts, and labor in writing before any work begins.

  4. 4
    Repair or replacement

We carry common pumps, tanks, switches, and check valves on the truck so most no-water calls finish the same day they started.

  5. 5
    System test and follow-up

We cycle the system, confirm pressure holds, shock-chlorinate when needed, and stand behind the work with a labor warranty.

What does it cost?

Re-priming a jet pump costs $150 to $400. A check valve or foot valve replacement runs $400 to $900. A dropped drop pipe or full pump pull runs $1,200 to $3,500 depending on well depth.

  • Free phone diagnosis
  • Free written on-site estimate
  • Same-day repair for most failures
  • No after-hours, weekend, or holiday upcharge

Every job gets a written, on-site estimate before any work begins. No surprise fees.

Frequently asked

Should I turn the pump off?

Yes. A pump running dry overheats fast and can be destroyed in under an hour. Shut the breaker off labeled WELL or PUMP and call us.

What is loss of prime on a jet pump?

Jet pumps need to be filled with water to create the suction that lifts well water up. If air gets into the suction line (bad foot valve, leak, cracked fitting), the pump spins but can't pull water. Re-priming sometimes works; a failed foot valve needs replacement.

Could my well actually be dry?

Possible but uncommon in central NC. Most Triad wells have 50 to 200 feet of water column. Run-dry usually comes after weeks of warning signs — sediment, brief outages, sputtering taps. We measure static level on site to confirm.

How much does well pump repair cost?

Most residential well pump repairs in central NC fall between $400 and $1,800 depending on the failed part, well depth, and whether the pump has to come out of the well. A full submersible pump replacement (pump, wire, drop pipe, and labor) typically runs $1,500 to $3,500. Every job gets a written on-site estimate before any work begins. Can you come out the same day?

Yes. No-water calls get same-day priority across the Piedmont Triad and our phone is answered 24/7. Most emergency calls are reached on-site within a couple of hours of the first call.

Do you warranty the work?

Yes. You get the full manufacturer warranty on the pump or tank plus our own labor warranty on the install. We answer the phone after the job is done.
