Well Pressure Tank Replacement in NC
When the tank fails, the pump starts cycling itself to death. We swap the tank, re-charge the pre-set, and tune the switch — usually same-day.
Well pressure tank replacement is the removal of a failed or waterlogged bladder tank and installation of a new pre-charged tank, switch, gauge, and tank tee. A bad pressure tank is the #1 hidden cause of premature pump failure — the pump cycles on and off every few seconds instead of every few minutes, and the motor burns out years early. Tanks typically last 8–12 years; if yours short-cycles, hammers, or sounds solid all the way to the top, it is time.
What our team handles on the call
- Diagnose waterlogged or failed bladder tanks
- Replace tanks with correct pre-charge for your switch (20/40, 30/50, 40/60)
- Install new pressure switch and gauge with the tank
- Install new tank tee, brass fittings, and union
- Size the tank to your pump's drawdown
- Haul away the old tank
How a service call works
- 1Free phone diagnosis
We walk through symptoms, water pressure, sounds, and system age to narrow the problem before we roll a truck.
- 2On-site test
We check voltage at the pressure switch, draw amps on the pump, and verify pressure tank pre-charge before opening anything.
- 3Written estimate
You see the recommended scope, repair vs replacement, parts, and labor in writing before any work begins.
- 4Repair or replacement
We carry common pumps, tanks, switches, and check valves on the truck so most no-water calls finish the same day they started.
- 5System test and follow-up
We cycle the system, confirm pressure holds, shock-chlorinate when needed, and stand behind the work with a labor warranty.
What does it cost?
Most residential pressure tank replacements run $400 to $1,200 installed depending on tank size (20–86 gallon) and whether the switch, gauge, and tank tee also need replacing.
- •20–32 gallon tank swap: $400–$650
- •44 gallon tank swap: $550–$850
- •62–86 gallon tank swap: $750–$1,200
- •Add new pressure switch + gauge: +$150–$250
- •Add new tank tee + brass: +$80–$150
Every job gets a written, on-site estimate before any work begins. No surprise fees.

Frequently asked
How do I know if my pressure tank is bad?
Tap the tank top to bottom. A healthy tank sounds hollow on top and solid on the bottom. A bad tank sounds solid all the way up — that means it is waterlogged. Other signs: the pump cycles on and off every few seconds, or pressure spikes then drops fast.
How long does a pressure tank last?
8 to 12 years on average. Tanks last longer when sized correctly and when the air pre-charge is checked once a year (2 psi below the switch cut-in).
What size tank do I need?
Tank size is matched to pump horsepower so the pump runs at least one full minute per cycle. A 1/2 HP pump usually needs a 32–44 gallon tank; a 3/4 HP needs 44–62 gallon. We size on site.
Can I just re-charge the air instead of replacing?
If the bladder is intact, yes — sometimes. But once a tank shows symptoms, the bladder is usually torn and air will leak right back out. We test first; if it holds, we just re-charge.
Do you warranty the work?
Yes. You get the full manufacturer warranty on the pump or tank plus our own labor warranty on the install. We answer the phone after the job is done.
Can you come out the same day?
Yes. No-water calls get same-day priority across the Piedmont Triad and our phone is answered 24/7. Most emergency calls are reached on-site within a couple of hours of the first call.
